The WSET Level 1 course offers a true beginner’s overview of wine, and is geared to anyone with an interest in wine for personal enjoyment or launching a professional career. It’s a particularly good starting point for people just beginning to work in restaurants, hospitality, or retail. Level 1 is a fun way to get up to speed on what wine is and how it differs by style.

The Level 1 course provides a systematized way of learning about and tasting wine, focusing on knowledge that is practical, hands-on, and designed to build a foundation for future exploration. The course will introduce you to basics of wine, broad different styles, simple storage and service rules, and easy techniques for pairing wine with a range of foods.

If you know the basic wine grapes—that Chardonnay is a white wine and Cabernet Sauvignon is usually red—then begin at Level 2. This beginner to intermediate wine course offers greater breadth and depth of material, and more tasting opportunities than Level 1. It’s for anyone who:

  • Works in wine or who want a career in the industry

  • Has a serious interest in deepening their wine knowledge

  • Wishes to become a more confident wine taster

This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines. How Does Level 3 Online Work at CWS?

The course is based around a fifteen-week structured online program with a recommendation of 10 hours study per week to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook.

The course follows a weekly structure and it is important to keep up with the work set for that week. Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

The course prepares the student for the WSET Level 3 qualification as they are guided by one of Commonwealth Wine School’s WSET educators. The student can contact the educator at any time for the duration of the scheduled course, should they have any questions. Each week includes a series of independent activities that guide the student through the key wine regions of the world looking at the factors in the vineyard and winery that influence wine styles. In addition, we will meet online as a group 5 times as the course progresses. In addition to the recommended bottles that will be used during the tasting tutorial, students are also advised to taste a range of wines during their studies on their own.

Wine Tasting:

Students will receive a list of recommended wines to purchase for themselves to use during the Live Online Meetings or while watching the recordings. Additionally, all online students will receive a referral code for a discount to purchase a Wine Tasting Kit consisting of 18 187mL bottles through Master the World. How Does Level 3 Online Work at CWS?

The course is based around a fifteen-week structured online program with a recommendation of 10 hours study per week to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook.

The course follows a weekly structure and it is important to keep up with the work set for that week. Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

The course prepares the student for the WSET Level 3 qualification as they are guided by one of Commonwealth Wine School’s WSET educators. The student can contact the educator at any time for the duration of the scheduled course, should they have any questions. Each week includes a series of independent activities that guide the student through the key wine regions of the world looking at the factors in the vineyard and winery that influence wine styles. In addition, we will meet online as a group 5 times as the course progresses. In addition to the recommended bottles that will be used during the tasting tutorial, students are also advised to taste a range of wines during their studies on their own.

Wine Tasting:

Students will receive a list of recommended wines to purchase for themselves to use during the Live Online Meetings or while watching the recordings. The WSET Level 1 course offers a true beginner’s overview of wine, and is geared to anyone with an interest in wine for personal enjoyment or launching a professional career. This beginner to intermediate wine course offers greater breadth and depth of material, more tasting opportunities and additional classroom hours compared to Level 1. It’s for anyone who:
• Works in wine or who want a career in the industry
• Has a serious interest in deepening their wine knowledge
• Wishes to become a more confident wine taster

This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Italian Wine Essentials, taught by Jo-Ann Ross, is the creation of the Wine Scholar Guild. It includes 8 1/2 class hours over 3 sessions (including an optional exam). The 15+ wines accompany the “need to know” regions, grape varieties, and wine styles. The often complicated world of Italian wine finally becomes accessible and enjoyable. This is a passport to Italian wine and a stepping-stone to the internationally acclaimed Italian Wine Scholar, a professional certification program on the wines of Italy.

We will guide you on a wine-focused journey through Italy, learning about legendary wines, foods, landmarks and cultural attractions as you “travel.” The program has been divided into three sections, each featuring a geographical area of Italy: the wines of Northern Italy, the wines of Central Italy and the wines of Southern Italy. Within each section, a tantalizing palette of wines are showcased.

How Does Level 3 Online Work at CWS?

The course is based around a fifteen-week structured online program with a recommendation of 10 hours study per week to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook.

The course follows a weekly structure and it is important to keep up with the work set for that week. Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

The course prepares the student for the WSET Level 3 qualification as they are guided by one of Commonwealth Wine School’s WSET educators. The student can contact the educator at any time for the duration of the scheduled course, should they have any questions. Each week includes a series of independent activities that guide the student through the key wine regions of the world looking at the factors in the vineyard and winery that influence wine styles. In addition, we will meet online as a group 5 times as the course progresses. In addition to the recommended bottles that will be used during the tasting tutorial, students are also advised to taste a range of wines during their studies on their own.

Wine Tasting:

Students will receive a list of recommended wines to purchase for themselves to use during the Live Online Meetings or while watching the recordings. Students have access to a “Course Community” where they can discuss content with the instructor and other students.

Our dedicated WSET course instructors will be available to answer questions and comments, as well as provide feedback on assignments for the duration of the course.

Commonwealth Wine School students also receive access to industry discounts that will help you in your study of wine.

How does the Online Course work?

The course material should take about six hours in total to complete, plus revision time.

Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

While participation in the Live Online Meetings is encouraged, it is NOT required, as all Live Online Meetings will be recorded and posted to the Online Learning Platform.

You can contact the educator any time for the duration of the scheduled course, should you have any questions.

Each module includes a series of independent activities to help you understand the differences between grape varieties and types and styles of wine.

At the end of the course, you’ll complete a short, multiple-choice exam (see schedule above), and upon passing, will receive a Digital Level 1 WSET certificate.

This online course features 3 lecture and tasting Live Online Meetings and can also be accessed at any time 24/7 during the 4 week course. Students can watch videos (including recordings of the Live Online Meetings), practice tasting, and quiz yourself on your own schedule.

Introduction to Wine Tasting [September 27]

Most of us know which wines we like and which ones we don't, but how do we distinguish whether a wine is fruity, buttery, spicy, acidic or dry?  How do we communicate about wine with the staff at our favorite wine shop or the sommelier at a restaurant?

Join Erika Frey for this introductory wine tasting class, and she will help you crack the code.  You will learn how to describe wine's colors, aromas, flavors, tastes and textures.  More importantly, you will gain a better understanding about what you like or dislike about certain wines and why.
